Mat Miles graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelors degree in music and a master degree in library and information science. Since that time he has worked as a librarian but also has maintained an active music freelancing schedule. During his college years he performed in bands backing up jazz artists Teddy Riley, John Faddis, Michael Brecker and Lisa Wilson. He also toured with BYU's top jazz ensemble Synthesis to Russia and the Baltics States.
Since graduating, has worked with a variety of groups including The Shirelles, Rick Sheppard and the Drifters, bassist Brian Bromberg, saxophonist Ed Calle and guitarist Corey Christiansen. In the Jackson Hole area he works with local pianist Pam and Keith Phillips, bassist Bill Plummer, Rob Honey and Andy Calder as well as drummer Mike Calabrese, guitarist Jeff Eidemiller and vocalist Nicole Madison. He also performs with local guitarist Phil Round and the Jud Grossman Band. He was a regular with the Jackson party band Soul Impressions and has been invited to play with bluegrass band One Ton Pig. At BYU Idaho where he works as a librarian, he co-founded the Faculty Jazz Group Swingset and toured Italy with the band in July 2001. He also co-founded the BYU Idaho Jazz Festival. He has played in jazz groups for many years with Wilson Brown, pianist and former musical director for the Lettermen. Maintaining his connections to Utah musicians, he appears on a semi-regular basis with The Party Crashers and The Groove Merchants - two bands in high demand for corporate events and wedding. |
